Privacy policy

What we collect when you read TechKea, who else is involved, and the choices you have.

TechKea collects as little personal data as it can. There are no accounts, comments or ads, and we don’t sell personal data. This policy explains what is collected when you visit, who collects it and what you can do about it.

This policy is effective from .

Who we are

TechKea (techkea.com) is operated by Aprici Inc., which is responsible for the personal data described in this policy. For anything about privacy, email us at hello@techkea.com. We handle privacy questions and requests by email rather than by post.

What we collect

Analytics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits and see which pages are read. When a page loads, a small script from static.cloudflareinsights.com sends Cloudflare a report about that page view: the page address, the page that linked to it, your device type, browser and operating system, your approximate country, and how quickly the page loaded.

It doesn’t set cookies or use local storage or any other storage in your browser, and Cloudflare says it doesn’t fingerprint visitors or track them across sites. Your IP address reaches Cloudflare as part of any web request, but Cloudflare says it discards it at the nearest data center and doesn’t store it, and that it doesn’t log query strings (the part of an address after a question mark). We see totals, such as views per page or visits per country, and can’t pick out individual readers.

We don’t use Google Analytics or any other analytics service. If we ever add one, we’ll update this policy before it goes live and ask for your consent where the law requires it. Cloudflare explains how Web Analytics handles privacy.

Hosting and security

TechKea is hosted and delivered by Cloudflare. To serve pages and protect the site from attacks and abuse, Cloudflare processes your IP address and standard request details, such as the page requested, the time, your browser type and the page that linked to us. Cloudflare may set a strictly necessary security cookie if it needs to check that a visitor is a person. It handles this data under its own privacy policy.

Site search

Search runs in your browser using an index stored on our own site, so your searches aren’t sent to a search provider. If you use the search page, your search terms appear in the page address, so they can show up in Cloudflare’s hosting logs. They don’t appear in our analytics reports, because those don’t include query strings.

Walkthrough videos

Reviews may include walkthrough videos hosted on YouTube. Nothing loads from YouTube until you press Play. Then the video plays from youtube-nocookie.com, YouTube’s privacy-enhanced mode, and YouTube (part of Google) may collect data and use cookies or similar storage under Google’s privacy policy, as it would for any video you watch. If JavaScript is turned off in your browser, Play opens the video on youtube.com instead.

Affiliate links

Some links go through a redirect on our own domain, starting with techkea.com/go/. The redirect doesn’t set cookies or record who you are, beyond Cloudflare’s normal request logs. It sends you on to the vendor or to an affiliate network such as Impact.com, which may set its own cookies or use a tracking code to credit the referral to us. What they collect is covered by their own privacy policies.

These networks send us reports about clicks, sign-ups and commissions. We don’t use them to identify individual readers. Our affiliate disclosure explains how these links work.

Email

If you email us, we receive your email address, your name if you include it, and whatever you write. We use it to reply and to act on your message, such as correcting a page, and we don’t add you to any mailing list.

Our email runs on Apple iCloud+, so messages you send us are stored by Apple under Apple’s privacy policy.

Theme preference

If you pick a light or dark theme with the toggle, your choice is saved in your browser’s local storage so it sticks between visits. It stays on your device and is never sent to us. Clearing your browser’s site data removes it.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t sell or rent personal data, and we don’t share it for advertising.
  • We don’t use Google Analytics, advertising pixels or tracking cookies on techkea.com.
  • We don’t run ads. If we add display ads later, we’ll update this policy before they go live.
  • We don’t have a newsletter yet. If we start one, signing up will be optional, and this policy will name the provider before it launches.
  • Fonts are served from techkea.com, so reading a page doesn’t send requests to Google Fonts or other font services.

If you’re in the European Economic Area, the UK or another place with similar privacy laws, these are the legal bases we rely on:

  • Hosting, security and redirect logs: our legitimate interest in running a site that works, loads quickly and stays secure.
  • Analytics: our legitimate interest in understanding which pages are read and how quickly they load, using a tool that stores nothing in your browser and doesn’t identify you.
  • Email: our legitimate interest in answering your message, or taking a step you’ve asked for, such as correcting a page.

Where data is processed

Cloudflare, which hosts the site and runs our analytics, and Apple, which runs our email, are based in the United States and process data in many countries. Cloudflare usually handles a request in a data center near you, but it may process the data in another country. If you press Play on a video, YouTube (Google) processes data under its own policy. So your data may be processed outside the country where you live. These companies say they use recognized safeguards for international transfers, such as standard contractual clauses.

How long we keep data

  • Analytics: Cloudflare keeps detailed analytics data for 7 days, then keeps only a reduced, aggregated sample. Our reports cover the previous 6 months.
  • Hosting and redirect logs: Cloudflare keeps request logs for a limited time under its own policies.
  • Email: we keep your message and email address only as long as we need them to respond, and delete them within 12 months.
  • Theme preference: stays in your browser until you clear your site data.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, privacy laws such as Canada’s Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), the EU and UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), and similar laws in other countries and US states, may give you the right to:

  • Get a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Have it corrected if it’s wrong.
  • Have it deleted.
  • Object to or restrict how we use it, including for analytics.
  • Withdraw consent you’ve given, at any time.
  • Complain to your local data protection authority.

To make a request, email hello@techkea.com. We may ask for details to confirm the request is yours, and we’ll respond within the time the law that applies to you allows.

Much of the data described here, such as analytics and hosting logs, is held by Cloudflare in a form that doesn’t tell us who you are. We’ll help with requests where we can, and you can also contact Cloudflare directly.

Children

TechKea is written for adults running businesses and isn’t directed at children. We don’t knowingly collect personal data from children under 16. If you think a child has sent us personal data, email us and we’ll delete it.

Governing law

This policy is governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there. That doesn’t take away any rights the privacy law where you live gives you.

Changes to this policy

If we change what we collect or how we use it, such as switching on ads or starting a newsletter, we’ll update this page before the change takes effect and change the effective date at the top.
